On 25 March, we celebrate the International Day of the Francophonie with our partners – the Official Languages Committee of the Bar Association of Ontario and the Association of French Speaking Jurists of Ontario.

On this occasion, I have the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Roger Bilodeau, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada.

He talks about his views on Francophonie throughout his career.

I invite you to come celebrate this special occasion with us to emphasize the importance of French in our judicial system in order to give all Ontarians access to timely and affordable justice.

The Society has recently reiterated its commitment to access to justice. In February, the Council approved a new framework for access to justice for the Society which includes the creation of the Task Force on Access to Justice as a permanent forum to promote change and collaboration.

Among the access to justice initiatives, the Society include:

  • participation in director implementation of recommendations of the report on access to justice in French committee.
  • The development, in partnership with AJEFO and the Attorney General, a pamphlet on the language rights of the francophone community.
  • The creation of two guides to educate lawyers and paralegals responsibility to inform their clients of their right to the use of French.
  • A commitment to provide many programs and services in French, particularly in the areas of professional regulation, access to a lawyer and a paralegal, professional development, publications and communications of the Society.
  • production in French and English reports consultation with the profession on policy initiatives.

We work with organizations to promote these important resources.

I look forward to hearing Mr. Bilodeau. These are the leaders like him that make institutions like ours are able to provide appropriate support to those and those who need it most.
