Colin Baxter

Colin takes an active interest in his clients and their matters, never straying from the end goal. He understands that problems can be more layered than they appear and that all angles have to be considered to gain a full understanding of his clients’ needs.

Bio

A founding member of Conway, Colin uses his deep litigation experience and unique understanding of the law to ensure clients receive expert advice and timely resolutions to complex issues. Colin has a bilingual practice in civil litigation and public and administrative law.

He specializes in complex commercial cases, and has acted for a variety of sophisticated commercial clients for over 30 years, including 18 years at a national law firm. Some of the clients that Colin represents include business owners, franchisors, lessors and lessees, and trustees in all forms of commercial matters. He is frequently retained for technology disputes, insurance-related litigation and defamation actions as well as procurement advice and shareholder, insolvency, product liability. and trust matters.

Colin also advises clients on appellate practice and advocacy and frequently acts as an agent before the Supreme Court of Canada. He has appeared as counsel before several federal and provincial public inquiries and has represented his clients in regulatory and disciplinary matters and various other cases involving government or quasi-public entities.

Colin served as law clerk to Justices Wilson and Iacobucci at the Supreme Court of Canada. He has appeared before numerous administrative tribunals and panels, as well as all levels of courts in Ontario, the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. He was recognized by the Quebec Superior Court as an expert in Ontario law of commercial contracts, and has worked as an arbitrator/mediator on the Commercial Law panel of The Electronic Courthouse.

Colin has an enhanced Government of Canada security clearance (Top Secret ) and is a designated Special Advocate for national security cases.

When he is not litigating or advising clients, Colin can be found on the cross-country trails or at the squash court calling “lets”. He also enjoys losing golf balls, salmon angling, photography, and wine collecting. Colin’s Golden Retriever, Gracie, remains entirely unimpressed with Colin’s advocacy skills.
